There’s a popular song “When you are old”. Who will care for you, when you are old and grey and full of sleep, and nodding by the fire?
First, you can take home cares. That’s the way the elderly have traditionally been cared for in China. If you earning much money from work, you can even hire a nanny for your parents. If you’re living a life that runs behind your expenses, it’s necessary to find an occupation around your family.
Second, you can take community cares. Modern times have created a lot of economic opportunities for China’s young people—often far from home, and that means leaving the elderly behind. In this condition, you can make a rather unique promise to get people to help their elderly neighbors. We call it the “Age Bank”. At the “Age Bank”, people rack up hours, noting them in a log book. They give their time caring for senior citizens—hours they can withdraw in their golden years as the next generation takes care of them. When you are a volunteer, you can running a quick errand or have a chat with them. To these elderly, the age bank has made volunteers feel like family, and kept elders so spry and so happy because even without family. Some cities are trying to do like this, such as the city of Chongqin.
Third, you can take nursing home cares. Nursing home care is care that is given to a person by government usually. In nursing home, the elders can be treated with special care. And the biggest advantage of nursing home is that it’s stable and it’s easy to have more concerns or helps from public.
Fourth, you can take housing endowment. You must have a valuable house before. And the city of Guangzhou acted as pioneer in proposing the method in 2015.
In all of these ways above, the first one means “Rearing Children for old Age”. However, the last three may solve the question “No long bedside dutiful son”. I think the third is more prospective than others.
